Samsung consumers will now get a free MultiChoice decoder for every television set they buy in hopes of encouraging digital migration among Kenyans.

In a Sh68 million deal between the two firms, MultiChoice will offer a free DStv or Gotv decoder for every Samsung television purchased.

Further, consumers will be eligible for free subscription for one month. The promotion, which was launched this week, will run for two months.

Councils in threat to demolish illegal structures in Konza

Owners of land falling within 10 kilometres from Konza Techno City have one week to demolish unapproved structures in the area or four local authorities will step in and bring down the buildings.

In a notice published on Monday the county councils of Olkejuado and Masaku, Makueni and the Municipal Council of Machakos said developments whose plans have not been approved by the councils, including fencing, would be demolished.

Universities set to offer courses in e-dumping

A university based in the United Kingdom has entered into partnerships with nine Kenyan institutions of higher learning to train students in electronic waste (e-waste) management.

Northampton University is known worldwide for its e-waste management training. It now intends to extend the knowledge to Kenya after entering into an MoU with the ministries of Higher Education and Environment and Mineral Resources together with the National Environment Management Authority (Nema). The deal was signed on December 17, 2012.

Citizen protests as CCK vows to shut down 11 other stations

The communications regulator on Saturday shut down six broadcast transmitters belonging to Royal Media Services.

The move affected the broadcasting of six radio stations and Citizen TV services in some locations in the country.

The Director-General of Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK), Mr Francis Wangusi, said they confiscated transmitters in Nanyuki, Narok, Migori, Nakuru, Mwingi and other areas he revealed the media house was operating using self-assigned frequencies.

Digital TV switch-over talks hit a snag

Talks between the Communications Commission of Kenya and a consumer lobby intended to agree on a new timeline for digital migration have failed to start after fresh disagreements emerged between the warring parties.

The Consumer Federation of Kenya (Cofek) yesterday said the two parties are yet to begin talks more than two weeks after a high court ruling ordered them to come up with an agreeable date on the switch off of the analogue broadcast signal.
